Dear CORESTA Colleagues,
The 2019 CORESTA Smoke Science & Product Technology Conference will take place from 6 – 10 October in Hamburg, Germany, at the Hotel Hafen Hamburg.
Below you will find some more information to assist you with preparations for your travel and stay in Hamburg.
We are looking forward to seeing you at the conference in Hamburg and wish you all success in preparing for this event.
The Organizing Committee
Arriving at the Hamburg airport “Helmut Schmidt” (HAM), it is recommended to take a taxi to the hotel. The ride takes approx. 30 minutes, depending on the traffic and will cost around € 35,-. Please, be prepared to pay the amount in cash, because most of the taxis do not accept credit cards. The taxi line is directly in front of the airport buildings.
All hotels can also easily be reached by public transport. The ride with the airport train takes around 40 minutes. The price is € 3,50. For public transport from the airport, follow the green sign with a white “S”. A ticket vending machine is at the end of the first escalator.
The train leaving the airport will be the S1.
For the Hotel Hafen Hamburg and others
Exit the S1 train at the station “Landungsbrücken” and continue for one further station with the U3 in the direction “Barmbek” - no additional ticket is required. Exit the train at the station “St. Pauli”. From there all hotels are within a distance of around 300 metres. To reach the Hotel Hafen Hamburg follow the street “Zirkusweg” until you arrive at the destination.
For the Hotel Empire Riverside Hotel
Exit the train at “Reeperbahn” Station and use the escalator at the end of the train platform. Take the right hand side exit called “Reeperbahn – Operettenhaus”. Follow the street for approx. 100 metres. At the Burger King restaurant turn right into "Davidstrasse“. At the end of the street, on the right corner, about 150 metres away, you will see a tall brown building which is the Empire Riverside Hotel.
Please note, for your return to the airport on the S-Bahn, only the first 3 cars of the S1 go to the airport!!
The conference will take place in the room “Elbkuppel” situated on the roof top of the Hotel Hafen Hamburg. The poster session and a possible parallel session will take place in the room “Ellipse II & Ellipse III” located in another block of the same hotel. Coffee breaks will be provided in front of the meeting rooms. Lunch is being served in the hotel restaurant as well as in the foyer of the “Elbkuppel”. Smoking is not allowed anywhere in the building.
Rooms have been blocked at the conference hotel “Hotel Hafen Hamburg” and the hotel “Empire Riverside” until August 1st and a small contingent until September 1st for the conference only. Please, make your arrangements as early as possible via the hotel web page or by e-mail (email@example.com), by entering the code “Borgwaldt 2019” in order to get the reduced conference price. On the website page "Accommodation", you will find all needed information and a list of other hotels situated close to the conference venue.
Sub-Group and Task Force Meetings
It has been decided by the Scientific Commission and the Board that SGTF meetings should take half a day and meeting rooms are blocked at the Hotel Hafen Hamburg for Saturday and Sunday. To accommodate the attendees, we agreed on fixed costs for conference rooms, coffee break and lunch. Via the registration page you can register for a SGTF meeting. For hotel reservations we were NOT (!) able to block rooms for Friday night and Saturday night. Please, make your own room reservations for these dates as early as possible!!
Accompanying Persons Program
We will organize a programme for accompanying persons on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. This programme will cover guided city tours in Hamburg, the city of Lübeck and its famous marzipan factory, a guided tour through the famous new concert hall “Elbphilharmonie” and other interesting places. Lunch is of course included in the program. Reservations can be made via the "Registration" web page. More detailed information is available on the website page “Social Events”.
Besides the scientific program, networking is one of the most important opportunities CORESTA offers. To support this we are organizing three events during the conference. All are located at the river Elbe site in front of the conference venue. You are warmly invited to join a welcome reception on Sunday night on the “Rickmer Rickmers”, a 120 year old three mast sailing ship permanently moored as a museum ship in Hamburg. On Wednesday afternoon we will take you for a boat trip along the river Elbe and through parts of the harbour. A traditional German evening in a brewery will close the conference and will give you the chance to celebrate what we hope will be a successful conference and turn back into relaxing mode after days of hard work, before leaving us to head back home. Traditional northern German food and refreshing beverages will be provided during the events. More detailed information is available on the website page “Social Events”.
