Welcome to the Joint Conference of the CORESTA Smoke Science and Product Technology Study Groups 2019

A big thank you to all presenters and delegates
for contributing to the success of the SSPT2019 Conference!

Abstracts and presentations will be uploaded on the CORESTA website (www.coresta.org) in November.

It is a real pleasure to welcome you to the 2019 CORESTA Conference of the Smoke Science & Product Technology Study Groups in Hamburg, Germany, hosted by Borgwaldt KC with the kind support of Sodim.

Located on the river Elbe with its more than 900 year old harbour and trading tradition, Hamburg is one of the most important economic and cultural locations in Europe. Currently it is the second biggest city in Germany and the harbour is ranked number two in Europe. Based on this tradition Hamburg has a specific relationship to sensitive goods like coffee, tea, spices, carpets and of course, tobacco. With the huge storage capacity of the, so called, Speicherstadt, or ‘warehouse city’, built in 1883, Hamburg became the tobacco capital of Europe. Even today around half of the German tobacco related tax is generated in Hamburg. Many companies related to tobacco and the production of tobacco products successfully established their business in and around the city.

But the city of Hamburg has also increasingly become a touristic attraction. Around 10 million visitors a year are enjoying the port atmosphere of the river Elbe, or walking the city centre lake called the “Alster”; or exploring some of the numerous canals, or simply enjoying the cultural and international sport events and attractions Hamburg has to offer. The latest touristic and cultural attraction is the Elbphilharmonie, Hamburg’s new philharmonic hall, which has already achieved international reputation for its acoustic sound and revolutionary architectural design.

CORESTA´s main priority is the exchange of scientific knowledge and experience. With the conference venue directly located by the river, we try to provide the ideal meeting place for participants to share their ideas with fellow colleagues, discuss their work, and develop new relationships.

This is why we have chosen Hamburg, a city conducive to great networking in a lively, but friendly and regenerating atmosphere. So, let your thoughts flow with the water and be inspired by the livelihood of the city and its harbour.

We are confident that you will appreciate the spirit and the energy of Hamburg to make your stay a memorable one and this scientific gathering a big success.

Advice to delegates (02/10/2019)
There is construction work on the train tracks around the conference venue (Hotel Hafen Hamburg) for at least the next two weeks. Trains are therefore replaced by buses. It is recommended that delegates NOT use public transport to travel from the airport to the hotel.
